Four Pillars of Destiny: An Introduction to Saju
What is Saju?
Saju (사주, also known as BaZi in Chinese) is an ancient East Asian system of destiny analysis based on the year, month, day, and hour of a person's birth. Each of these four time units is represented by two Chinese characters — a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch — creating eight characters in total, which is why it is also called the Eight Characters (팔자, Palja).
The Five Elements
At the heart of Saju is the theory of the Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Every stem and branch corresponds to one of these elements, and the interactions between them — generating, controlling, and overcoming — create the dynamic energy map of a person's life. A skilled Saju reader interprets the balance and flow of these elements to understand a person's character, strengths, and potential challenges.
The Ten Heavenly Stems
The ten Heavenly Stems (천간, Cheongan) represent the Yang and Yin aspects of each of the five elements. Each stem has a distinct character: Jia (甲) represents the upright, pioneering energy of Yang Wood, while Yi (乙) represents the flexible, adaptive energy of Yin Wood. Understanding your Day Master — the stem of your birth day — is the starting point of any Saju reading.
